memory lane

i was driving down the backroads last night on the way home from work, and champagne supernova came on the radio. instinctively, i cranked up the volume and rolled my windows down the rest of the way, singing at the top of my voice.

"how many special people change / how many lives are livin' strange / where were you while we were getting hiiiiiiigh"

that song is the summer of '97 when i was going into grade ten; an angsty awkward teenager who hated everything about high school, couldn't figure out where exactly i fit in and my summers lasted forever. i'd spent part of the summer at my cottage because my parents didn't like my friends; i hated missing out on the scene but looking back, those weeks i spent with my family alone helped me to understand and get along better with them. i was only pretending to be rebellious anyways - i wouldn't have really run away. i would have missed them too much.

when i was finally back in the city and could get out of the house with my friends, we'd spend our afternoons loitering on queen street west, hanging out by
muchmusic hoping we'd run into our favourite bands, watching people at speakers corner, visiting used cd stores and raiding vintage clothing shops for kids soccer jerseys sponsored by local garages or men's mechanic shirts with the name badge still on them.

mine was huge and blue, and belonged to a guy named
phil.

we wore original airwalks (before nike bought them out and started selling them at payless), and baggy raver jeans; visited the
eatons centre and goofed around all summer, taking the long subway ride back to the suburbs at the end of the day.

someday you will find me / caught beneath the landsliiiiiide / in a champagne supernova, a champagne supernova in the skyyyy

what songs are inextricably bound to a specific memory for you?

For me it's Bohemian Rhapsody...it was playing on my first date. :)

Oh my gosh - you are young!! I have 70's rock on my MP3 player - all music from high school. They just don't make music like they used to.

I'm a child of the 80's...though the much of the 60's & 70's is my heart-music! :o)

Honestly, lots of them. Music is a HUGE memory trigger for me. I can hear one song and think about my boyfriend from high school, another might bring back the awkward fun of middle school dances, and another remind me of hanging out with my best friend in college. <3 music memories!

haha - i KNEW i'd date myself with that post! i generally try to steer away from obvious references to my age but i just couldn't resist with this one!

Oh my goodness, your teenage years sound just like mine! I would say any song from Nirvana's Nevermind album reminds me of those years. I remember the gas station shirts and baggy jeans! It's funny, because my mom looks at what most girls are wearing in high school these days and is thankful for the skater trends, haha.

oh my. i loved this post. i can just put myself right back there. airwalks and all. i remember the cranberries. so many cranberry songs take me there.
++++
kurt cobain singing "in the pines" belongs to one specific moment of time for me. a drive through the night from my parents house to seattle. after introducing them to my boyfriend (they were not impressed) and i was hell-bent for heartbreak. so so so in love. we sang it through the mountains at the top of our lungs - in ugly thrift store sweaters. again and again and again.

Oasis and I go waaay back, and Champagne Supernova is one that always makes me smile. Summer, midnight at an empty youth center, and a pool table. Aaah, now those were the days! :)

(BTW, your blog is gorgeous!)

Okay... I have so much to say here. First, she's really cute and she's mine. All mine. She's a lil younger than me (score for me) so I definitely listened to Oasis during a different time in my life. I did the whole hanging out on Queen Street near Much Music bit too, but again, it was a different stage of my life. I'm a total child of the 80s. Michael Jackson and breakdancing were my thing in the early 80s with Beat It, Billie Jean and Thriller bringing back some specific grade school memories I'll never lose. In the late 80s and early 90s hair metal was my thing. Songs from Poison, Def Leppard, Whitesnake, G'n'R, Aerosmith and the like are still my musical mainstay to this day and I live in the memories they conjure. I don't look or act like an 80s metal skid but that era is definitely in my soul and forever will be. "Here I Go Again (On My Own)" from Whitesnake is my anthem and "Sweet Child Of Mine" from G'n'R sends shivers through me when I hear that opening riff. I'm gonna go listen to it now.

Ohhh, and I taught her that fact about Airwalk/Nike. XO

Oh man, the 90's. Something makes me think that you and I would have gotten along quite well back then.
