early to rise

getting up super early in the morning to work out is proving to be more enjoyable than i'd thought.

my alarm goes off at 5:25 AM and i roll out of bed right with a few moans and groans. groggy, i stumble into the washroom to splash some water on my face and brush my teeth. my hair gets pulled back in a ponytail and i pull on my workout gear. (read: lululemon pants and a t-shirt made out some space age breathable stay-dry material. i bought it because i liked the design on the front; it says 'run' in many different languages. awesome.)

i go downstairs and tie on my running shoes, which are slowly getting a little more broken in. then comes my favourite part.

outside, the air is still fresh, dew clinging to the grass. the early birds are busy getting their worms, and are boasting proudly to boot. i start off with a brisk walk, eventually breaking into a slow jog. the road is a little wet - maybe it rained last night? most other people on my street are just barely waking up; there are even fewer getting into their cars. it's just me and my avian buddies, watching the sun come up.

the morning sky is gorgeous - it's all muted shades of pink and purple. it often reminds me of sunset, but holding more energy and promise for the day to come.

my running time is a little slice of me-time, slipped in before anyone else awake. it's my quiet time. my slow time. the best part is, i don't really notice the lungs-exploding feeling as much as i thought i would.

yeah, i'm starting to like this running thing.

(what lil things do you do in the morning to set yourself up for a good day?)

wow, 525 am!! That is impressive. I rouse myself for a run at 730 and feel I've done something incredible. While not quite as early, running in the morning along the river has been a similar discovery for me. There is a cute little family of geese I look for and I feel like I've finally been let in on the secret of why all of those other runners/walkers/cyclists are out there. It is an amazing new discovery!

You make running sound very tempting! I naturally wake up between 6:30 and 7 each morning, and I like to go around checking on and watering the plants. I feel that if they start the day happy, so will I!

You manage to make running sound almost enjoyable, lol! I have bad knees myself and have to stay away from high-impact things like running...but I could see getting up for a bike ride in the early freshness, perhaps.

Good luck with your running!

Good work! I used to get up early and run when I was in College and haven't since--your description of the experience make me want to get up at 5:25 too!

I've been running for a few weeks now too, not so early in th morning though! My run yesterday was in the rain which was actually quite nice as it cooled you down

As a late night gal thinking of getting up at 5:25 makes me panic but put me on a yoga mat at 9:30 and now we're talking lol. Your routine & connection with the natural, quiet world around you sounds so relaxing kudos for getting so into it :)

I'm up early with a cup of tea that I can sip quietly while I read a novel. It eases me into the morning. I used to workout in the morning, but now I save it for my evenings.

the way your describe it, getting up at 5:25 am and running around doesn't sound too bad. my good start begins with the breakfast scott usually leaves me when he goes to work at 6:15 am!

You go girl! My husband has to wake up that early and I just roll over back to sleep. Getting up that early does has it's advantages. Maui has the best sunrises and I am always in awe by them.

Congrats on finding time to get out, get exercise, and get a glimpse of the sun coming up!

I'm going for a 16km rollerblade tomorrow morning; just me, my lululemon and the birds!

This is very impressive! Sounds like it's becoming a nice routine, which isn't always easy to say about exercise!

I just love your writing! I on the other hand wake up to my very loud alarm and two kids screaming "mom get me breakfast" and "mom where is my book bag". It is very rarely peaceful or as poetic as yours, but it's my life so I am sticking to it. lol

Completely not a morning person, I don't like to wake up before 9, but I am jealous of you, I wish I could do that, it sounds so peaceful and refreshing, but I don't get my energy until the evening.
